Critical Intervention Specialist
Critical Intervention Specialists provide direct, community-based support to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities who are experiencing behavioral or mental health needs. They work collaboratively with individuals, families, caregivers, Service Coordinators, and providers in homes, schools, day programs, and other community settings.
The role supports individuals throughout crisis prevention, response, stabilization, and transition. Responsibilities may include gathering assessment information, recognizing emerging concerns, supporting de-escalation, developing practical behavioral strategies, coaching members of the support team, coordinating services, and documenting progress.
This work requires sound judgment, adaptability, patience, and the ability to remain calm in challenging situations. Critical Intervention Specialists build trusting relationships while helping individuals and their support teams strengthen skills, resources, and strategies that promote safety and stability.
CBEM provides role-specific training, access to interdisciplinary consultation, and ongoing support from an experienced team. Employees have opportunities to develop specialized expertise in IDD crisis intervention and broader community-based mental and behavioral health services.
Critical Intervention Specialists typically hold a master’s degree in psychology, social work, counseling, behavioral health, or a related human-services field. Specific education and experience requirements may vary by position and service location.
